African origins of the domestic donkey.

چکیده
We sampled across most of the Old World distribution of donkeys (see Table S1). Samples were collected only from small and remote countryside villages taking great care to sample unrelated individuals. From domestic asses, skin biopsies were collected and stored in 95% ethanol before DNA extraction. Fresh feces of three Equus africanus africanus were collected in Sudan from two different wild herds (21o08''N 36o20'E 20o46'N 36o49'E), and three Equus africanus somaliensis individuals were sampled in Berlin Friedrichsfelde Zoo (studbook 30, numbers 241, 365, 381). The African Nubian wild ass inhabits northeastern Sudan close to the Red Sea and the Eritrean border, whereas the African Somali wild ass is mainly present in Ethiopia, Somalia and Eritrea. Both wild African ass subspecies are considered critically endangered and are on the red list of the IUCN(1).

Ancient DNA from Nubian and Somali wild ass provides insights into donkey ancestry and domestication.
Genetic data from extant donkeys (Equus asinus) have revealed two distinct mitochondrial DNA haplogroups, suggestive of two separate domestication events in northeast Africa about 5000 years ago. Without distinct phylogeographic structure in domestic donkey haplogroups and with little information on the genetic makeup of the ancestral African wild ass, however, it has been difficult to identify...
متن کاملDomestication of the donkey: timing, processes, and indicators.
Domestication of the donkey from the African wild ass transformed ancient transport systems in Africa and Asia and the organization of early cities and pastoral societies. Genetic research suggests an African origin for the donkey, but pinpointing the timing and location of domestication has been challenging because donkeys are uncommon in the archaeological record and markers for early phases ...
متن کاملThe history and spread of donkeys in Africa by Roger Blench
The domestication and historical development of the donkey are traced through archaeological and linguistic associations. The donkey is indigenous to the African continent and its wild progenitor is usually considered to be the Nubian wild ass. Historically, a chain of races of wild ass spread from the Atlas Mountains to the Red Sea and probably as far south as the border of present-day norther...
متن کاملCharacterization of Several Milk Proteins in Domestic Balkan Donkey Breed during Lactation, Using Lab-on- -a-chip Capillary Electrophoresis
Domestic Balkan donkey (Equus asinus asinus) is a native donkey breed, primarily found in the northern and eastern regions of Serbia. The objective of the study was to analyze proteins of Domestic Balkan donkey milk during the lactation period (from the 45 to the 280 day) by applying lab-on-a-chip electrophoresis. The chip-based separations were performed on the Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer in comb...
متن کاملIdentification of Y chromosome genetic variations in Chinese indigenous horse breeds.
Y chromosome acts as a single nonrecombining unit that is male specific and in effect haploid, thus ensuring the preservation of mutational events as a single haplotype via male lines. In this study, 6 Y chromosome-specific microsatellites (SSR) were tested for the patrilineal genetic variations of 573 male samples from Chinese domestic horse (30 breeds), Przewalski's horse, and donkey. All the...
